Once in a great while, we get a real treat to showcase.  We take pride in every auction, but sometimes we encounter something that whets our appetite and inspires us to go further than usual in the photographic and descriptive process.  Each of our specialists have their hobbies and preferences, with some of us specializing in sports and sporting equipment, others into coins and numismatics, and in this case, our weapons enthusiast was absolutely giddy to take the photos and write the listing for a centuries-old Japanese Sword.

Check out the auction, and you’ll see how we take every effort to sell an item this special.  We make certain to perform proper research to know which terms to use in the description, and we go the extra mile when it comes to detailed photographs.  With an item such as this which is a real work of art, we make certain to highlight every important aspect.  On a Japanese Sword like this Tachi, it’s important to show it with proper lighting and using multiple angles in order to reveal the hamon, or temper line, plus reveal any visible damage.  The mei or signature on the tang is very important, and fortunately, this sword has papers with it that identify its maker and year, confirmed by a noted sword evaluator.  Our consignor provided us all the information we needed, and the result is an auction that has a far greater chance of sale.

We’ve had the pleasure of selling Katana before, and the Tanto which this consignor brought in sold last week for $4500, so we have seen some great successes in selling fine Japanese antiques.

This Le Coultre Atmos clock sold for $458.00!

This Le Coultre Atmos clock sold for $458.00!

It wasn’t long ago we shared with you a classic clock which sold very well, but we’ve got another one that deserves attention!

This brass Mantel Clock, model 528-6 by Le Coultre Atmos, isn’t as old as that Howard Miller piece, but its striking design, immaculate condition, and incredible clockwork brought it considerably higher bids!  We made sure to photo not only the face and maker’s marks, but to do so in a way that the gleam of the brass really caught the eye!  The brand name is sought-after, and the 15 Jewel VXN movement is a great selling point, but the close-ups that show the gleaming gears and even the cut grain of the metal had several of our bidders drooling!

In the end, this fantastic clock sold for $458.00

Scenic downtown Chesterton as seen from Auction Bay

It’s Tuesday the 3rd and Chesterton is ground zero for a massive dumping of lake effect snow from Lake Michigan.  The forecasts project a healthy 8-16 inches of accumulation today and tonight, and from the looks of the snow, it’s likely to happen!

Check out the picture taken from our front door looking out onto the park in Downtown Chesterton.  Can you see the gazebo?

Nevertheless, we at Auction Bay are ready to serve you!  Our doors are open from 11-7 each weekday, and today is no exception.  If braving the blizzard conditions isn’t your cup of tea, feel free to call us up and get more information about items you might like to sell!  In the meantime, we’re writing up ads and getting your items listed.  Stay safe out there!

This Howard Miller Mantel Clock sold for $122.50!

This Howard Miller Mantel Clock sold for $122.50!

We recently sold a great antique mantel clock, made by one of the most reputable names in clockmaking.  Ranked among the best are Seth Thomas and Howard Miller, and this one in particular got a lot of attention.

When listing a clock like this one, we take special care to take detailed photos of the face and the clockwork, and any identifying maker’s tags.  It will sell really well if it has working movement with multiple tones and chime sounds.  This one had bim-bam chimes and a a selector to allow it to play one of three tunes: Westminster, Saint Michaels, and Whittier (plus one more for silent).  The No. 143 Triple Wind 612-430 Mantel Clock’s functional and attractive condition brought an impressive $122.50 sale price.
